Closing Time

Tony Kapel, 33 of Miami, set out to make a documentary about the TM Sisters in December 2007, but when he learned that the Miami DIY art duo was sharing studio space with Jen Stark, Jon Peck, Manny Prieres, Pres Rodriguez and other artists, the project grew a little bigger. Then he started taking his video camera into venues such as PS14, Studio A and Churchill's to shoot local musicmakers such as Rachel Goodrich, Fantome and Jesse Jackson doing their thing. That music is now a soundtrack of sorts to his 83-minute documentary Closing Time.
"I kind of came up with [the name] because it goes well the fact that bands get put together and then they break up, and then they fade away," Kapel explains. "Everyone has a peak and then they just kind of float on from there, you know? So its kinda like that thing where even though you can still be successful as an artist, you're not like that name still being thrown around. You can still sell your work but it's not like everyones talking about you still."
But for now the artists in Closing Time are getting plenty of attention. On Friday, the TM Sisters will close their first big solo exhibition at the Art and Culture Center. Mod'Lone, a Miami pop-electronica band that includes Kapel and his wife artist Maitejosune Urrechaga, will perform at the event.
The artist who created Closing Time is getting attention too. The film debuted at Cinema Paradiso a few months ago and will be shown on April 27 at Sweat Records' Music Movie Monday. Meanwhile, you can watch this 23-minute excerpt that opens with Rachel Goodrich singing a gorgeous little song about popsicles.
