Television, fairy tales and other pop-culture staples inspired the artists behind Pop! Pop!

Boca Raton illustrator and painter Helena Garcia regularly conjures characters who live in worlds populated by small birds, cupcakes, spaghetti and music. But the sassy German girl she depicts in "Berlin" dances around and smokes. Garcia says she was exploring "how fashion like this is always captured in magazines like "Nylon" and in books like "Fruits." It's an expression of subcultures from all over the world and I wanted to explore that in my own way."
Garcia is one of 31 local and national artists who drew from pop culture to create art for PinkGhost's Pop! Pop! group show, which will open Saturday. The artists were inspired by various sources, including the TV series "Lost," psychedelic alt-rock band the Flaming Lips, texting, reality television and classic fairy tales.
