Television, fairy tales and other pop-culture staples inspired the artists behind Pop! Pop!
Given the range of topics tackled in the art, plenty of real-life chatting should take place this Saturday at PinkGhost. Sometimes, the creation of art can be as interesting as its theme. Such is the case with Dan F. Birch's "Pop Coyne," created in the likeness of Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. After taking a renewed interest in the band a few years ago, the Brooklyn-based Birch created a pencil work on torn paper with an ink splatter. He then rendered the image on a computer.
"Lastly, I added staples to the light box that [Coyne] wore because it seemed in the vein of their hands-on approach to everything," he explains. "It's a computer printout because that is today's answer to the '60s-pop, screen-print style.
"I thought it would be cool to make prints and then, through many different ways, take away the quality that was there originally, because in the end, pop changes and distorts," Birch concludes. "Take a look at Michael Jackson—ultra cool in the '80s, gigantic weirdo now."
Pop! Pop! will open, with free treats from Buddha Belly Cupcakes, 7 p.m. Saturday at PinkGhost, 21 W. Las Olas Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale. The show will continue through July 10. Admission is free. Call 954-616-1304 or visit Pinkghost.net. Contact Colleen Dougher at cdougher@citylinkmagazine.com.
