Hurricane cocktail guide

On the eve of a hurricane our ego–driven state is vacant. Dusty palm fronds skirt across sandy streets, birds disappear into the heavens and the ocean appears to be steamed flat like a blue silk scarf. The eerie calm before the storm is real. If it wasn’t for the busy work: hanging up shutters, cleaning the yard, the last hot shower before the tub is filled with water… then we’d all go insane just waiting.

The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration predicts 12 to 16 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes and two to five major hurricanes of a category three or higher.

What will this season bring? Negative? Positive? Category 1? Category 2? Category 5?  We grapple with the idea: Maybe this time I’m out of luck—like awaiting the results of a pregnancy test after one careless night.

Only time will tell if any hurricanes surface between June 1 and November 30, but while everyone else is stocking up on water, batteries and a generator, Metromix is gathering cocktails to protect us from ourselves while we wait for hurricane season to pass.

Click on our hurricane checklist to see what we're sipping.
