Located in the corner of a nondescript strip mall in Pompano Beach, Korrigan's Irish Pub won't transport you to the motherland, but its attention to detail packages just enough lucky charm to overcome its suburban setting. The front door of Korrigan's opens to a large, multileveled restaurant and bar that, with family-style seating on the upper level and a bar in the pit at the center of the room, could remind you of a chain restaurant. Fret not.
Atmosphere: Although Korrigan's is not quaint in the typical style of the area's British pubs—it features no nooks with weathered hardback books, faux fireplaces or employees with strong Irish brogues—it takes great strides to ensure its status as a cozy neighborhood bar. Throughout the establishment, small glass lockers keep Korrigan's mugs safe for patrons, who purchase them for $25. For that amount, patrons also receive their own locker and key and are treated to happy-hour prices 24 hours a day. Clad in green, plaid kilts that are short but not trashy, the bartenders are friendly young women who take time to make small talk with the customers.
Entertainment: In the back of the bar, patrons can play pool, darts and a golf video game or just pump quarters into the jukebox. The four flat-panel screens above the bar are kept at minimum volume, and only turned up during major sporting events. On Wednesday nights, Just Dave plays acoustic songs. On Sunday afternoons, Korrigan's offers poker tournaments. In the daytime, you will hear popular British and American rock acts such as U2, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5 and Kings of Leon. On weekend evenings, however, the joint plays hip-hop and Top 40 music.
Food and drinks: Korrigan's offers typical Irish fare, such as bangers and mash and corned beef and cabbage, as well as burgers and build-your-own sandwiches. The bar boasts the range of imported drafts that you would expect from an Irish establishment, and its drink prices are generally low. A Guinness costs $5, a Stoli mixed drink costs $4.50 and a Grey Goose mixed drink goes for $6. If you want to try a special mystery drink, order the Korrigan, a 60-ounce drink mixed with eight different liquors and served in a pitcher. It costs $12.
