Decked out like a pirate ship but with all the space of a canoe, The Pirate Republic is a hidden treasure of the Fort Lauderdale beach. A trail of stencilled skulls on the sidewalk leads to a meager walkway where skull-and-crossbone flags flap in the wind. Here, locals give in to the bartender's command to "walk the plank" before she places thimble-size sake glasses on top of two chopsticks resting on a glass of beer. One the count of three, everyone screams and then bangs their heads on the small wooden bar, and whoever chugs their sake bomb the quickest gets bragging rights and another shot.
