Universal Studios Orlando isn’t the only place paying tribute to Bloody Mary this Halloween. According to urban legends this ghost can be beckoned through mirrors, but we’d rather summon her namesake, a ubiquitous brunch cocktail with a spicy kick.
Did you know South Florida is the rumored home of that very drink? Some say bartenders at Ta-boo on Worth Avenue created it as a hangover cure, but the claim to its name is still up for grabs. Various accounts state that Palm Beach socialite Mary Warburton was the inspiration when she spilled a tomato-and-vodka drink on her white dress.
Some local places trust that you know your way around a Mary, like The Downtowner, which invites guests to choose garnishes. Popular favorites include bleu cheese–stuffed olives, horseradish, Clamato and pickles. Those who want to learn from the pros, however, should check out the following recipes.
