Jen Stark
"The New York Times" called the work, exhibited in Miami in August 2007, "a not-so subtle statement about the hypercommercialized art market." Stark says she was simply interested in the idea of having a million of something.
"Everybody wants to be a millionaire," she explains. "Does that mean a million dollars? It could mean a million pieces of candy. It could mean a million cut pieces of paper, so the idea was to challenge myself to doing such a high number and at the end, I would literally become a millionaire."
The sculptor, illustrator and painter, whose work has been exhibited at galleries in Seattle, Chicago and New York, continues to challenge herself by making sculptures such as "Opposite of Possible," in which she incorporates metallic paper to create a sculpture that appears to be melting off a wall at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale.
Stark's work will be on exhibit through Oct. 6 in the "13/08 Thirteen Artists in 2008" exhibition at the Museum of Art, 1 E. Las Olas Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale. Another show of Stark's works will open Aug. 11 and run through Sept. 30 at Art Gallery at Government Center, 111 N.W. First St., in Miami.
