PICK OF THE WEEK: RATATOUILLE

Few companies have done more to squash the belief that animated movies are just for kids than Pixar. Mega-hits like "Toy Story," "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" have given the CGI-animation house a track record that most Hollywood studios would kill for and become favorites among audiences of all ages.

But this past summer Pixar took another step forward with "Ratatouille"—the story of a Parisian rat who dreams of becoming a gourmet chef. Remember, it's never what a movie is about, but how it is about it. And the execution of "Ratatouille" is top notch at every level. Sophisticated writing, dazzling visuals and emotionally affecting characters add up to what is arguably Pixar's best film yet.

The DVD release of "Ratatouille" promises a feast of bonus features including the Pixar short "Lifted" (which played before the film in theaters), an animated defense of rats starring some of the film's characters, deleted scenes in sketch form, and a conversation between director Brad Bird ("The Incredibles") and Thomas Keller, the owner of Napa Valley's The French Laundry restaurant.

And if you have a Blu-ray player be sure to check out the movie in that format, where the eye-popping visuals just might make your head explode. Take that "Shrek"!
