PICK OF THE WEEK: RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION

With the holiday rush officially over, the new DVD offerings are slim indeed. A trio of underwhelming action flicks hit disc and the only one of the bunch to really succeed at its modest intentions is the zombie sequel, "Resident Evil: Extinction."

Loosely based on the popular videogame series the movies follow genetically altered heroine Alice (the ever-lovely and increasingly buff Milla Jovovich) as she crosses paths with various survivors of Earth's zombie apocalypse.

Improbable stunts, gore and ass-kickings ensue. This third installment adds "Heroes" star Ali Larter and RnB singer Ashanti into the mix, with negligible results.

Bonus features are limited but highlighted by 11 deleted scenes. There's also an audio commentary from producers/franchise overlords Paul W.S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt, a making-of and two geektacular previews--one spotlighting the first ever CGI "Resident Evil" movie and another for the upcoming videogame "Devil May Cry 4."

For fans looking to finish the "trilogy" this is a no-brainer to rent or purchase. And if you're hardcore you may want to pick up the hi-def "Resident Evil 3-pack" available on Blu-ray and including the original "Resident Evil" and follow-up "Resident Evil: Apocalypse."

The individual films are all also available on Blu-ray.

Also released:

"September Dawn"
"Shoot 'Em Up" (also Blu-ray)
"War" (also Blu-ray)
