Los Diablos front man Mark Dubin described his band's songs as rock 'n' roll comfort food—a satisfying sound that's like sitting down to meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

"Some people call what we do Americana, alternative country or roots rock," Dubin said. "But if you ask me, it's good comfort rock 'n' roll. We're not out to change the course of rock music. We're just out to make good music."

The five-member Fort Lauderdale unit plays a combination of classic country-rock and straight-up punk. The guys built their music on a foundation that included playing in some of South Florida's best-known underground bands, such as the Johnsons, the Hang Ups, Holy Terrors and Nuclear Valdez.

But that doesn't mean Los Diablos is still toiling away in the subterranean.

"If people are into the Rolling Stones, Wilco and Gram Parsons, they will enjoy hearing us," Dubin said.

Los Diablos formed in 2001, and Dubin said the band's name, Spanish for "the devils," was picked for its cool vibe.

After taking a year-long break and going their separate ways, Los Diablos arrived back on the scene in 2006. The reason for their return was simple: "We were happier playing together," Dubin said.

The group is in the studio recording songs for its full-length CD debut, which is due next spring.

Besides Dubin, who handles lead vocals, the band includes drummer Chino Leon, lead guitarist Jorge Hernandez, bassist Will Trev and Tom Stankus on lap steel guitar.

The band performs about 11 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Fort Lauderdale's Poor House, 110 SW Third Ave.; 954-522-5145.
