Miami's own Otto Von Schirach is set to conquer the world
Music critics have labeled Schirach's sound as everything from grindcore to dark house and dance metal. Schirach has referred to his sound as "outer space bass disco grindcore with Miami love all over it." But the confusion that results from trying to label him is to be expected when each new album and side project he releases sounds different than its predecessor.
"I totally grew up listening to tons of grindcore and punk and new wave and death metal, and was still into hip-hop and electronica," explains Schirach, who is of Cuban and German descent. "My mom was really into freestyle hip-hop and Miami bass, and all that stuff grew on me all at once."
As a result, his albums incorporate all those styles simultaneously, and often include porn samples, campy sci-fi movie effects and the gushing sounds of bodily fluids.
Schirach first caused a stir with the limited-edition release "Pukology." The 7-inch record was pressed on puke-green and brown vinyl and packaged as a double album. Only 666 copies of the recording were produced. "That's kind of a hard album to listen to," Schirach admits. "It was hard to make."
The music was created entirely from sound samples of vomiting, defecating and urinating that his friends and fans had recorded. While this makes for a rather disgusting listening experience, it nonetheless proves almost danceable, thanks to Schirach's breakcore, grind-inspired production.
