Miami's own Otto Von Schirach is set to conquer the world
A video on YouTube shot at the Dour festival reveals the differences between Schirach's American and European fans. In the video, thousands of people surround a mosh pit that boasts more bodies than you'd ever see at a show in South Florida.
"In America, when I've toured with Skinny Puppy or Venetian Snares, it was different crowds," Schirach explains. "With Snares, it's kind of weird seeing who shows up. They're a whole different breed."
But Schirach hasn't always drawn a crowd.
"I started out DJ'ing these ghetto parties these girls threw," he recalls. "They told this dude to become a DJ, and so we teamed up and the girls paid us. I was 15 and I really got into it. I bought a drum machine off this crackhead so I could make mix tapes. Making music was kind of the only real job I ever had. This is my main gig; it's full-time. I used to sell drugs and stuff until I grew up. I realized I had to just do it all off music, and so I started touring."
At first, those tours simply took him around the country. "I jumped on with [Miami-based record label] Schematic and toured with the label," he says. "I was just a name on the roster, but it got me out there."
