More than 20 years after the dawn of booty music, South Florida clubgoers are still shaking that ass

It's no secret that the drawing power of dance clubs in South Florida is stronger than just about any other nightlife element, save gambling. While most scenes are struggling to survive against apathy and the rotten economy, clubs that offer Top 40 hip-hop and pop, reggaeton, soca and salsa continue to attract business. It's almost as if it's in South Floridians' DNA to shake what our mamas gave us. Outfits that look as if they've been painted on and dance moves that would make Patrick Swayze blush are the norm here. Even those people who walk into dance clubs with their noses turned up may find themselves, after a cocktail or four, turning up their tails and catching the fever of slick rhythms and 160 bpm. And nothing can turn a dance floor into a near-orgy like the Miami-born, dirtier-than-dirty art form known as booty music. Despite the genre's misogynistic and puerile overtones, losing oneself to this music just feels so freakin' right.
