More than 20 years after the dawn of booty music, South Florida clubgoers are still shaking that ass
Few people are as in touch with South Florida's dance floors as DJ GQ (real name: Gary Hardie), a charismatic yet soft-spoken Jamaican-American who holds Wednesday and Sunday night residencies at Rodman's Rehab at VooDoo Lounge and Thursday and Saturday nights at Art Bar, both in Fort Lauderdale.
"In the club, there isn't a week that goes by that someone doesn't come up to me and ask for booty music," GQ says. "It's that ridiculous, but all of the songs are hits from 10 years ago. People ask for DJ Laz's 'Esa Morena' or [Splack Pack's] 'Shake That Ass.' People come up to me and say, 'Do you have any Luke?' and I know that they want to hear booty music."
Booty no longer dominates South Florida clubs as it once did, but the genre endures, shaking its assets in your face whether you want it to or not. There may be no greater testament to booty's longevity than the fact that Luther Campbell—its smirking, oversexed poster boy—is going national once again.
