Mates of State Sept. 12 at the Culture Room

Husband-and-wife duos such as Sonny and Cher, Ike and Tina Turner and Meg and Jack White have historically put on some excellent shows. But they almost always end in divorce. Let's hope that doesn't happen to organist Kori Gardner and drummer Jason Hammel. There were no fancy costume changes or elaborate sets at the band's Fort Lauderdale show—just Gardner behind her keyboards and synthesizers and Hammel armed with a couple of drumsticks. At times, the sweaty, enthusiastic crowd was singing along so loudly, I could barely hear the band. For a split second, we had a CBGB moment in the 954. (Joanie Cox)
