The Dish
The glass case displaying pastries is the main attraction. The cuernos, or "little horns" as owner/baker Haydee Casaine calls them, are soft, sugar–coated pastry shells filled with vanilla or chocolate cream (two for $1). The chocolate is my favorite, with its touch of raspberry in the filling. That same creamy filling is used in the chocolate raspberry tart ($1.50), prepared with a crust that melts in your mouth and is topped with fresh raspberries.
If you like decadent, try the raspberry–cream–filled chocolate cups ($3.50 for six) that are so rich you'll be satisfied with just one. Apparently, the apple puffs ($1) are the most popular item. With a thin layer of apple puree stuffed inside a light, flaky pastry finished with confectioners' sugar, it's hard to eat just one.
Casaine, a Puerto Rico native, changes the items frequently but keeps her one staple: flan ($1.50). Not being a huge flan fan, I cringe when she announces it is her signature item, saying it is the "best flan you'll ever have." But I tried it and this is the first flan I've enjoyed. It's creamy—not runny—and the light, sweet flavor blends wonderfully with the pool of not–too–sugary caramel sauce.
The bakery also offers fresh coffee ($1.25), water and soda ($1 each) to help wash down all the delicioso sweets.
