The Dish
My two favorite reasons to stop at the newly opened Anna's are the potato pancakes and pirogi. Providing I can resist the urge to surrender to the enticing aromas of fresh sausage, smoked fish and meats, along with a small but tempting selection of baked goods.
The Polish–style potato pancakes are as big as a Frisbee and come three per order ($2.95). These have crunchy, lacy edges surrounding soft–grated potatoes served piping hot from the griddle with plenty of sour cream packed in separate lidded containers. Good? You bet. But the house–made pirogi are even better. Your choice of fillings include potato and cheese, sauerkraut and mushroom, pork and sauerkraut, or just sauerkraut. A generous hand dished out an even dozen pork/sauerkraut pirogi ($6.95). Each semicircular, boiled then lightly fried dumpling has dough with a toothsome bite and good amounts of flavorful filling. To enhance this ethnic treasure, crisp–fried bacon bits and a scattering of sauteed caramelized onions are sprinkled over the heap of pirogi before they're packed for takeout.
