South Florida's first modern arts center, completed in 1990, cost about $60 million. Major touring companies of Broadway shows appear in the Au-Rene Theater, while smaller and mostly regional productions appear in the cozy Amaturo.

Both halls possess good acoustics and, if the sound mix is right, sitting in the last row of the Amaturo is a fine perch. In the Au-Rene, avoid the front rows, especially for a rock musical, because the sound from the speaker towers flanking the stage can be ear-splitting.

The area around the theater, Himmarshee Village, is a restaurant and nightclub district.
